We live in a world now where we attach far too much meaning, energy and focus on words. For example some words like “selfish” only has negative energy and guilt attached to it. Is this right? There isn’t only a bad version of being “selfish”. How many times have you put yourself second or even last? How many times have you not taken an action or shared a personal opinion because you knew you’d be perceived “selfish”? Putting yourself first and/or being authentic and true to yourself is not being selfish. Negative selfish is where your actions directly impact others in a negative way when it could have been avoided. That’s completely different to doing what’s best and important to you. There are times you need to be “selfish” and choose you over partner/kids, friends, family or work. Is it “selfish” to take 30 mins to exercise or to take a needed timeout from life/work and get alone time when needed? No it’s not. However society conditions us to feel every act for self is selfish. Bullshit.
